You cannot update version 4 and earlier catalogs in Lightroom 5 beta.
And as always with Lightroom public betas, to begin working, you must import images into a new version 5-compatible catalog. The tools and features on offer may be changed before final release and we do not recommend using beta software for any mission critical work.
